How to rename FTP account username in Plesk? (Video)

In Plesk, you cannot directly rename an FTP account username once it has been created. However, you can achieve the same result by deleting the existing FTP account and creating a new one with the desired username.

Here's how you can do it:

Step 1: Log in to Plesk

  1. Open your browser and navigate to your Plesk control panel.
    • The typical URL is: https://your-domain.com:8443 (replace your-domain.com with your actual domain or server IP address).
  2. Enter your admin username and password to log in.

Step 2: Go to "Websites & Domains"

  1. After logging in, click on the "Websites & Domains" tab in the Plesk dashboard.
  2. This section will display all the domains and subdomains hosted on your server.

Step 3: Access "FTP Access" Section

  1. In the "Websites & Domains" tab, find the domain or subdomain associated with the FTP account you want to rename.
  2. Click on "FTP Access" (or "FTP Accounts", depending on your Plesk version) to see the list of FTP accounts for the domain.

Step 4: Delete the Existing FTP Account

  1. Locate the FTP account you want to rename.
  2. Click on the "Delete" button next to the FTP account you want to rename. Confirm the deletion when prompted.
    • Important: Deleting the FTP account will remove its access, so ensure you've saved any important data or files from the FTP account before deletion.

Step 5: Create a New FTP Account with the Desired Username

  1. After deleting the old FTP account, click on the "Add FTP Account" button to create a new FTP account.
  2. In the new account creation form, enter the new username for the FTP account.
  3. Set a strong password for the new FTP account and choose the appropriate directory the user will have access to.
  4. Set the desired permissions (read/write or read-only) and optionally set a quota (storage limit).
  5. Click "OK" or "Create" to create the new FTP account with the desired username.

Step 6: Update FTP Client (if applicable)

  • If you or the user were using an FTP client (e.g., FileZilla, Cyberduck), update the username and password in the client to reflect the new FTP account details.
  • Test the connection using the new username and password to ensure everything is working correctly.

Additional Notes:

  • Password and Permissions: When you create a new FTP account, make sure the permissions are set correctly (read/write or read-only) based on the user's needs. If needed, you can set a quota to limit how much disk space the FTP account can use.
  • FTP Clients: After changing the username, any FTP client that was configured with the old username will need to be updated with the new login credentials.

Although you can't directly rename an FTP account in Plesk, deleting the old one and creating a new one is the simplest way to accomplish this.
