How to Remove an Add-on Domain in cPanel? (Video)

If you no longer need an Addon Domain hosted on your account, you can remove it through cPanel. Removing an addon domain will not delete the domain registration, but it will remove its associated website files and settings from your hosting account.

Here’s how to Remove an addon domain in cPanel:

Step 1: Log in to cPanel

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to your cPanel login page (e.g., https://yourdomain.com:2083).
  2. Enter your username and password, then click Log in.

Step 2: Access the Addon Domains Tool

  1. Scroll down to the Domains section in the cPanel dashboard.
  2. Click on Addon Domains.

Step 3: Locate the Addon Domain

  1. In the Modify Addon Domain section, you’ll see a list of all addon domains on your account.
  2. Find the addon domain you want to remove.

Step 4: Remove the Addon Domain

  1. Click the Remove button next to the addon domain.
  2. Confirm the removal if prompted.
    • This action will remove the domain from your account but will not delete its website files.

Step 5: Delete the Website Files (Optional)

  1. If you no longer need the website files associated with the addon domain:
    • Go to the File Manager in cPanel.
    • Navigate to the document root folder for the addon domain (e.g., /public_html/example.com).
    • Delete the folder and its contents.
  2. Be cautious when deleting files to avoid accidentally removing data for other domains.

Step 6: Update DNS Settings (Optional)

  1. If the addon domain is still registered but will no longer point to your hosting account:
    • Log in to your domain registrar.
    • Update the DNS settings or nameservers to redirect the domain to another hosting provider or the registrar’s default parking page.

Step 7: Test the Changes

  1. Attempt to access the addon domain in a browser to confirm that it is no longer associated with your hosting account.
  2. It may display a "DNS not found" error or redirect to the updated DNS settings.

Tips for Removing an Addon Domain

  • Backup Files: Before removing the addon domain, back up its files in case you need them later.
  • Email Accounts: If the addon domain has email accounts associated with it, those will also be removed. Back up important emails before proceeding.
  • Retain Domain Ownership: Removing the addon domain does not affect your domain registration. You’ll still own the domain unless you choose not to renew it.

By removing an Addon Domain in cPanel, you can clean up your hosting account and free up resources while retaining control of your domain for future use.
