Why can European datacenters reduce latency?

Latency is the delay in moving data between two points. Round-trip time (RTT) measures the journey to a destination and back. Hosting nearer your UK or EU audience can reduce the distance each request travels compared with an origin server across the Atlantic.

The benefit matters for checkout requests, account dashboards, APIs and other interactions that need a response from the origin. However, a geographically closer datacenter can still perform worse if its network takes an indirect or congested route.

Separate network delay from application speed

A low ping does not prove that a page loads quickly. Time to first byte (TTFB) also reflects connection setup and server processing. Measure real pages and API endpoints as well as network delay.

A content delivery network (CDN) can serve cached files closer to visitors. Dynamic requests may still reach the origin, so place the application and its database with their communication needs in mind.

Which European datacenter location should you choose?

Start with your audience distribution. London is a candidate for a mainly UK audience; Frankfurt for users in Germany and nearby markets; Amsterdam for a mixed UK and continental audience. These are locations to test, not a ranking of guaranteed performance.

How do peering and routing affect performance?

Peering lets networks exchange traffic directly. As DE-CIX explains, exchanging traffic at an internet exchange can avoid longer routes between networks. A provider’s presence near an exchange does not establish which routes your traffic will use.

Ask about the hosting network’s autonomous system number (ASN), upstream carriers and routes to your users’ internet service providers. Direct peering can help, but it does not eliminate jitter, congestion or delays on a customer’s broadband connection.

Check resilience separately

Ask where traffic is filtered during a DDoS attack and whether rerouting changes latency. Two server locations also need working replication, health checks and a tested recovery procedure. Multiple locations or Anycast DNS alone do not guarantee instant failover.

How to test European datacenter latency before buying

Request a test IP or HTTPS endpoint for each shortlisted location. Confirm that it represents the network used by the plan. Test from your main customer regions; a result from your office alone is not enough.

  1. Keep conditions comparable. Use the same application, page size and cache state for each location.
  2. Repeat measurements. Test at different times, including busy periods, across relevant broadband and mobile networks.
  3. Record more than the best result. Compare median and 95th-percentile response times, request failures and packet loss where measurable.
  4. Save the evidence. Record endpoints, source networks, timestamps, sample counts and tool versions.

These curl timing values are cumulative elapsed times from the start, in seconds; they are not separate phase durations or ping RTT. Check the HTTP status, and test the final destination URL if it redirects. A CDN-backed URL measures the served path, not necessarily the origin. One request is a diagnostic check, not a benchmark.

Does European hosting make a service GDPR compliant?

No. Server location alone does not establish GDPR compliance. Review the processing arrangements, security controls, retention, subprocessors and international transfers. The UK and EU have distinct data protection regimes; “European hosting” does not identify which applies to every activity.

Ask where primary data, backups and logs are stored, and where support staff can access personal data. The ICO’s guidance on controller and processor contracts explains the contractual responsibilities. Its international transfer guidance helps identify relevant cross-border arrangements.

The European Commission lists the UK as adequate under the GDPR, with a renewal decision in December 2025.   • Evidence: documentation for any claimed facility certification, energy sourcing or data protection arrangement.
